Transcends is proud to announce the RIFIDI® 3.6 public release, further “Connecting the Internet of Things (IoT) with People”. This release was made possible through client implementations, the RIFIDI open source community feedback, surveys, forums and our dedicated global engineering team.

The key focus of this release is to include the Application Level Events (ALE) GS1 standards as part of the Rifidi Edge Platform.  ALE provides a simple web service based interface for defining business events through pure configuration (no coding required) hiding many of the lower level details. An example implementation of this could be defining reader 1 and antenna 1 to 4 (of a 32 antenna reader) as a logic representation of the back dock door. Then subscribe to the logical reader definition to receive all tags arriving at the back dock door within a 10 second period of time and deliver the message to a MQTT message topic.

Another key feature of the release is extending the monitoring features by publishing real-time sensor and Rifidi application state changes to a MQTT message topic (with configurable end points). An example could be notifying in real-time that a sensor has disconnected which may mean the sensor has lost connectivity, hardware and/or network issues have occurred via a MQTT message.

The Internet of Things and Role Transcends Powered by Rifidi Plays

As the Internet of Things (IoT) continues to evolve and mature, we at Transcends have learned more about how our solutions and the Rifidi platform add value to end users. Out of the box (based on our Radio Frequency IDentification roots) we provide a way for users to capture and interpret business data.

Our RFID edge processing/middleware product filters and translates RFID reader information into users’ sensor driven infrastructure, interpreting business events according to user specified criteria. Transcends solutions can provide notification when an asset arrives or departs from a specified sensor “read zone,” which can help users locate valuable equipment in manufacturing or R&D settings, or prevent shoplifting in retail settings.

Leveraging our platform, which is flexible and extensible, the same framework can be applied to other sensors for a wide variety of business purposes. Here are a few key areas where Transcends solutions and our Rifidi platform add value. Already widely utilized in the RFID industry, the same platform can address similar Internet of Things solutions.

Tailor Precisely for Security Concerns

Our products provide users with flexibility and a choice about the appropriate level of exposure risk for their sensor data. The edge boundary could be in the cloud, on the premises, or even within a specific area like a shelf or desktop. The location of the “edge” is defined by the end user’s concerns about where the relevant events occur and how responsive they should be. Users determine the benefits versus the risks, and users choose the security exposure threshold that fits their business needs.

Leveraging the Internet of Things is of value only if users are able to respond to sensor events in a reliable, precise manner. For example, there is little value in automating the security of retail assets if store security personnel aren’t alerted and the shoplifter leaves the store. With Transcends’ solutions, users can tailor the response according to the amount of precision required by the business case. As an example, patterns of retail asset behavior such as several items leaving a shelf within a few seconds can be used to more precisely predict shoplifting.

Address the Skill Set Gap Affordably

Users who are new to the Internet of Things and need to implement a solution fast, without a steep learning curve, value Transcends’ Rifidi platform because it significantly accelerates time to market. In addition, it provides common implementation patterns across IoT uses, lowering maintenance costs and freeing up resources to focus on higher level business functionality.

  • The Rifidi platform provides a common interface for all sensors or readers used in developing business solutions (application program interface/API.)
  • Rifidi emulates RFID readers in software, so there’s no longer a need to purchase physical devices for learning or for developing solutions – which means faster, more cost effective training.
  • Transcends and its Rifidi platform are part of a mature community with a repeatable, trusted and reliable way to deliver sensor driven solutions.
  • Being open source and building on open industry standards reduces the learning curve, eliminating the need to have specialized, hard to find and sometimes very expense skill sets – providing access to a larger, global talent pool.

Ensure User Solutions Stay Current

Scalability, adaptability, maintainability and flexibility are key words in the software development world, and particularly in the fast-changing Internet of Things. Transcends’ products provide users with the ability to scale a business solution over time, as the volume of sensors grows. This brings solutions to market faster and maximizes return on investment. Transcends builds on open software and IoT industry standards to ensure users can adapt quickly to changing business needs and opportunities. As IoT continues to evolve, Transcends customers aren’t locked into a black box proprietary solution.

Thanks to Transcends lightweight platform approach, Rifidi products can be deployed across a wide spectrum of appliances, from embedded devices, to enterprise class servers, to the cloud. Transcends also ensures backward compatibility between versions, so users’ solutions will not be quickly outdated or need expensive, time consuming replacements. Transcends platform architecture takes a building block approach, below. This ensures that user needs are met today, while providing the foundation to further evolve and adapt as business needs change.

Real Service, Real Solutions

Industrial Client Gains Competitive Advantage from Higher Productivity and Control of Inventory Costs

Increasing the level of process automation in industrial settings often provides a competitive advantage. More automation increases productivity, workflow throughput, quality and reliability, while reducing labor and inventory costs. Transcends’ Rifidi platform allows real-time visibility into your asset flow on an individual item level. Easy integration of that data with your ERP system (on premise or in the cloud) allows managers to access assets throughout your enterprise, ultimately increasing customer satisfaction. Rifidi enabled an apparel rental company to establish a new warehouse from the ground up within just a few months. A high level of process automation keeps costs low, with increased productivity and full visibility into item-level inventory at each step of the workflow.

Retail Clients Go Beyond Basic Inventory Tracking to Theft Warnings and Targeted Advertising

Regular brick-and-mortar stores struggle to achieve the real-time inventory accuracy consumers enjoy with online websites, yet retailers need such accuracy to successfully implement omni-channel strategies. While regular RFID technology can increase inventory visibility on the sales floor, Transcends’ Rifidi enables retailers to turn basic inventory data into smart data that triggers actionable business events. The Rifidi platform allows smart shelf solutions to alert sales clerks about stock out situations and possible thefts, allows marketing applications to deliver context-sensitive advertisements, informs store management about consumer and workforce behavior, and creates a more personalized shopping experience with smart mirrors. Using Rifidi to take advantage of local intelligence on the sales floor increases sales and improves customer satisfaction.

Better Understanding the Real Value in the Internet of Things (IoT)

Author: Brian P Pause – Co-founder of Transcends and Rifidi

The scope of the Internet of Things ecosystem is rapidly evolving to be comprised of Machine to Machine (M2M) communication, Smart Devices, Wearables, Sensors/RFID, BigData/Analytics/Visualizations and low cost computing (embedded and Cloud). This is all well and good but what does this mean in terms of the real value? There have been many articles as of late discussing the market size and revenue potential but in my opinion value goes beyond a quantifiable amount (such as dollars and size)

The noun form of value is defined as “the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something. “

To understand real value using this definition one needs to take the time to understand why would people (organization, customer, employee, friend) care to get to the real value of IoT?

In conversations I have participated in and research I have performed the real value appears to align these categories

  • The potential realized productivity and efficiency gains
  • The increased quality of life
  • The new insights into data driven by analytics

Examples of these can be seen by current and near term happenings in the market around IoT.

Wearables being used by people to monitor ones health and day to day activities soon integrating with the retail medical facilities being setup at places like Walmart.

Automation of factories and workflows previously requiring manual labor and human intervention driving productivity and efficiency .

Sensor data such as wifi, beacons, rfid, mobile devices being used by retailers to better understand consumer behavior through analytics tools like Tableau and ClickView (to name a few).

And not to far completely new business models such as drones delivering orders from Amazon or new business for the matter when the complete business/organization is developed and enabled through the use of IoT

Yes the ultimate desired outcome is growing market share and revenue. But ultimately taking the time to understand the real value in IoT will ensure you realize the near and long term potential.
